About the Houston Indoor Drumline
The Houston High School Indoor Drumline participates in local, regional,
and national competitions as a member of Winter Guard International (WGI).
They have twice been a World Championship finalist, most recently in
2004. The group consists of approximately 30 members chosen
from members of the marching band drumline (both mallet and battery
players). The Drumline travels extensively in the spring and is under the
direction of Michael McCray.
Our indoor season is busy, fun, and competitive!
The indoor season
begins in November with auditions, setting the lines, and
section leader essays and interviews. Rehearsals begin
shortly thereafter so participants can learn and refine the program for the actual competitive season
that runs from January to April. Practices are generally
held for three hours
every Tuesday and Thursday nights and eventually evolve to
include additional practices on Monday nights, Saturdays and holidays. There may also be sectional practices in addition to individual, at-home
work and private percussion lessons.
Along with the music
education, appreciation for the arts, and competitive techniques,
the kids learn life lessons of hard work, dedication,
determination, goodwill, and team work. As Mr. McCray says,
"It's not about drumline. It's about life."

The 2007-2008 Indoor Drumline show was entitled “N-Motion” and was designed to convey the process of developing and displaying creative motions through continual movements; at the same time, showcasing true musical skill with expressive and colorful sounds. The show combined original compositions by drumline instructor, Mr. Michael McCray, with music by Danny Elfman and Bryan Tyler. Contributing staff members include Michael Wilson, Amanda Peterson, Isaiah Rowser, Sarah Sharp, Jordan Arnett, Brian Greenwald, Brandon Smith, Matt Howell, Jason Palmer, and Jamie Ingalls.
The indoor drumline competes in both the Southeastern Color Guard Circuit and Winter Guard International Circuit.
